What is it?
‘Comhrá’ is an ongoing Irish conversation that takes place online every year. Many groups take part in the event ‘Comhrá’; Irish language and Gaeltacht groups, third level clubs and societies, schools, GAA clubs, radio stations, Conradh na Gaeilge branches and many other community groups!
When is it?
Comhrá ‘23 will take place from 09/10/2023 to 12/10/2023.
How can I take part?
‘Comhrá’ takes place on Zoom, therefore it is very easy for anybody to take part on a computer or phone. We are joined by groups from Galway to Asia and from Belfast to North America. The most important thing is, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, we want you to be a part of an Irish speaking community.
What is our aim?
Our aim is to promote Irish all over the world and inspire people to speak our language. As the old saying goes; ‘ Beatha teanga í a labhairt’ / The life of a language is to speak it!’
The History of ‘Comhrá’
Conradh na Gaeilge first launched ‘Comhrá’ in 2013. It was the first Irish language record with a continuous online conversation where 168 hours of non-stop conversation was achieved in October 2013. The record was broken in 2014 with 169 hours of conversation. An attempt was made to reach 170 hours in 2015 but was not successful until 2016, when Irish communities across five continents managed to spend 170 hours speaking Irish in conjunction with Conradh na Gaeilge. The following year, during Comhrá ‘17, Irish speakers reached 171 hours of talking through Irish. 172 hours were achieved in 2018. We accomplished our goal for Comhrá ‘22 and will certainly break the record again this year with Comhrá ‘23. We would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the campaign over the years.
